Should I go to chiropractor or urgent care?

If you are experiencing discomfort in your neck and back and are considering your options, it is in your best interest to contact A chiropractor. Chiropractors are trained in structural rehabilitation of the spine, offering treatment that is designed to relieve pressure on the discs between your vertebrae.

Should I just visit Urgent Care instead?

Visiting an urgent care center will not afford you the anywhere near the treatment or level of relief that treating with a chiropractor regularly will. The chiropractor is a trained professional with the ability to examine, diagnose and treat pain and injuries to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. If you visit an urgent care center, it is more likely they will offer you ibuprofen or muscle relaxers.

Taking medication is not the answer to cervical and lumbar spine pain. Only through a course of consistent chiropractic care can and will your neck and back problems become resolved.

Chiropractors are trained to offer comprehensive rehabilitation to individuals and do advise them as to the proper methods of lifting, bending and even standing. A skilled chiropractor can look at an individual and determine by the way they are standing and exactly what section of the spine is injured. In many cases, there is a build up of pressure in the cervical and lumbar spine that needs to be relieved. Urgent care medication that is prescribed will do nothing to relieve this pain-it will only mask it. Only through chiropractic manipulation can and will this pain and discomfort be properly and effectively treated.

There are two main types of clients who seek treatment from a chiropractor:

*Motor vehicle accidents
Very often, individuals are injured in motor vehicle accidents and sustain injuries to their cervical and lumbar spine. The cervical spine is more commonly referred to as the neck and the lumbar spine is the lower back region. In the common motor vehicle accident scenario, the driver is thrust forward toward the steering wheel and then snapped backwards toward the head rest. This violent jerking motion is known as whiplash and causes injuries to the cervical spine.

The lumbar spine is also often injured in motor vehicle accidents. The lap belt restricts movement of the lower body at the time of impact. This restriction causes damage to the lower back region, most specifically at the L5-S1 level which is a hinge where your tailbone meet your spine.

If you are experiencing pain, numbness or tingling into your upper and lower extremities as a result of a motor vehicle accident (or any other type of accident) that is known as radiculopathy. This is where the nerves in your cervical and/or lumbar spine are being pressed upon by the discs. The discs in your neck and back are located between the vertebrae and are shock absorbers. When you have sustained a trauma to your neck or back region, the discs often become dislodged. If the disc is out of place it is known as a bulging desk. A skilled chiropractor can manipulate the region to relieve pressure in the area where the disc has become displaced. This will restore normal feeling to your upper and lower extremities.

However, if you have sustained a herniated disc it means the disc itself has torn and the liquid center known as the nucleus pulposus has leaked out. Chiropractors are also able to assist in relieving this type of pain and pressure through various techniques such as electrical stimulation, the application of a TENS unit, hot and cold packs and traditional spinal manipulation by hand.

*Scoliosis
In the event that you are born with a severe curvature of the spine, a chiropractor can also help this condition. Everyone is born with a slight curvature of the spine which is known as scoliosis. Those born with a more severe case can turn to a chiropractor for professional assistance that will relieve some of the pressure and offer a reduction in the pain the person is experiencing.
